De matting is needed when there are knots in your dogs coat.
Mats are solid clumps of knotted fur which can be found anywhere on your dog’s body, they’re most commonly found in areas where your dog’s fur rubs together. These can be rather painful for the dogs so just doing a little grooming routine can help prevent mats. But, certain breeds are more susceptible to matting, even with proper grooming.
When checking for mats, check the areas behind the ears, in between the toes, between the front legs in the armpit, around the bottom and stomach and along the backs of the legs. Due to these areas rubbing can cause mats and then feel painful. Brushing your dog a few times a week and taking the time to look at the coat you can see if matting is going to be a problem. Most dogs with soft or long hair can develop mats between grooming. Dealing with them doesn’t have to be a traumatizing experience for either you or your dog. If they’re too matted then the best thing is to clip the mat off and that way it won’t be traumatic for you to groom your furry and it stops them getting out of control. In fact, if mats aren’t removed, they are painful and start pulling at your dog’s skin or starting to itch.
If I feel the dog is painful from the mats – I will clip them off. Its not worth your furry being upset and distressed from being groomed.
